Abel Babcock and Jane Amor married in Troy, New York on 19 Apr 1832. The wedding notice was printed in the Troy Sentinel five days later.

The above information was found using the full text search on FamilySearch. Happy dance ensued!! Jane Amor (or Amore) was the sister of my 2X Great-Grandfather William Amore. Via a submitted biography of my Great-Uncle George W. Amore in a Coshocton County (Ohio) History and Biographical Information book, he said that his father (William) was born in Troy, New York. The information about Jane’s marriage was the very first source that placed a member of William’s family at that location.

The Abel Babcock family was located in the 1840 US Census living in Adams Township of Coshocton county. Based on General Land Office records, Abel purchased the land and was living there by 1835. The couple’s oldest son, Truesdell, was born in New York in 1833 and their second son, Arnold, was born in Coshocton county in 1836. The couple had a daughter, Elizabeth, and two more sons, John and David Clark, before Jane died in 1845. She is buried in the Caton cemetery in Coshocton.

In September 2023, my husband and I traveled to several places in Missouri while I was participating in the All Missouri Quilt Shop-Hop. When we were in the northwest part of the state, we stopped in Savannah in Andrew county. My second great-grandmother’s sister, Matilda (Reed) Imus Beale, is buried at Savannah Cemetery. Next to her are her son, a grandson and granddaughter.

Matilda Ann Beale and her son Albert L. Imus

Albert’s son and daughter – Benjamin L. Imus and Lulu M. Imus

Matilda Ann Reed (16 Apr 1826 – 8 Apr 1887) was born in Maryland according to each US Census from 1850 to 1880. She married Elon Imus on 28 Aug 1848 at the age of 22 in Coshocton, Ohio. By July 1852, the family were living in Galesburg, Illinois and two years later, they settled in Iowa where they continued to live. Elon died in October 1865. One year later, Matilda married Samuel S Beale in Andrew county. The following April, Matilda passed away aged 60 years 11 months 29 days. Her gravesite is in Section 1 Row 19 (north to south) M08

Albert Lincoln Imus was born in March 1861 in Iowa. He married Lellie Moran in Savannah, Missouri in Aug 1888. The family included eleven children. Albert died in Savannah in 1923 and Lellie died in 1945 and is also buried at Savannah Cemetery.

Benjamin and Lulu Imus – two of the eleven children of Albert and Lellie – were born in 1900 and 1892 respectively. He married Mazie Fallen in December 1925 in Rolla, Missouri. They had one child – Benjamin W Imus before the father, Benjamin, passed away in 1927. Lulu, born in Holt county, Missouri trained as a nurse at the Johnson Sanitarium in Springfield. It was there that she probably contracted tuberculosis during her short career as a nurse. She passed away at the age of 25 having never married.

It was a good feeling to finally “meet” my great-aunt Matilda – especially since my ancestry is not in Missouri. I’m still finding other distant relatives who ended up migrating from Ohio or Indiana to Missouri and have a list of cemeteries to visit.

It’s Been Awhile

A couple of years to be more specific. I haven’t forgotten my blog – life has happened since I’ve been away.

Personally, we settled in to our forever home and new twigs have been born into our family. We’ve taken several trips around the state – including visiting the graves of my ancestors’ relatives. Life has been wonderful!

I have been continuing education in research, local archives, and DNA. I look forward to attending RootsTech virtually for the 9th consecutive year. This past August, I attended the Annual Missouri State Genealogical Association genealogy conference held in Jefferson City at the State Archives over two days with The Legal Genealogist, Judy Russell, as featured speaker. A couple weeks later, I virtually attended a genealogy conference sponsored by GenealogyKC. I have attended webinars given by Diahann Southard of YourDNAGuide spotlighting different ways to find recent ancestors.

Using some of the newer features on Ancestry and FamilySearch, I’ve learned some fascinating information – but that will keep for future posts!
