Great info for keeping and sharing. Thanks for putting this out there - it could very well start a much needed dialogue with loved ones. Also, even if you know your loved one's wishes (or your own), you can help the process by looking into funeral costs ahead of time. According to the Federal Trade Commission, every funeral home is required to provide a General Price List (GPL) upon request which describes every service provided (escort, chairs, tent, funeral service/viewing, cremation, etc.) as well as the cost. Having an idea of options and cost ahead of time will be of tremendous help once a loved one passes away, especially at a time when family members won't have much time and/or the presence of mind to evaluate various options.

I'm so sorry you've had to go through all this on top of losing your mother.

My father died intestate but we sailed through probate as there was no bickering. We were not as lucky when my grandfather died and I have not talked to my cousins in more than 20 years partly because of the hard feelings back then.

You've made an excellent list and I hope others take it to heart. I'm good on only 1, 2, 3 and 7 and need to get it together on the others. Thanks for the reminder.

Great post - also think about using a video recorder to take an inventory of items as well as listing them. There are also various free web applications now that make it easier to document or inventory your household.
