We're both on the same page, Wendy. Yesterday my son (my baby) graduated from high school. I don't know what the future holds for him. He's considering college but I think that's because it's what people expect him to do and because he doesn't know what kind of good-paying job he could get if he doesn't get a college degree. He's very bright but he doesn't like the whole academic thing. He'd rather be out working. Unfortunately, he's been raised in a family of over achievers who all have college degrees. He got used to a lifestyle that he won't be able to obtain on a blue-collar budget. It's a tough place to be for a young person starting out.

My dad dropped out of school at an early age (some say at 12, others say he was 14) to sell newspapers on a street corner. He came from a family of 11 kids and only the baby of the family graduated from high school. Everyone else was expected to start working as soon as they were able and help support the family. College was never an option for him. Neither was high school.

My son has so many more advantages and choices available to him. But it's still not an easy place for him to be. Like you, I just want him to be a productive member of society. But especially here in Michigan, where we've been in a recession for a couple years now, jobs are hard to come by. It's not such an easy thing to be a productive member of society.

We shall see what the future holds for the class of 2008. Let's keep them in our prayers.
